Hedron abuse
Psst - this was posted

I’ve written about how much I love Hedron Crab before, but that was based on unplayed decks - imagined scenarios.

Based on a few games played last night with the Crab, I believe it to be one of the best creatures ever created in Magic: the Gathering. Big words, I know so we better start backing it up.

The card

The itself is a 0/2 blue creature that costs only one blue mana to bring into play. On your very first turn you’re looking at something able to block almost anything your opponent can put into play their first turn.

It’s ability is a Landfall-triggered one, that makes target player lose the top three cards from their library into their graveyard each time a land comes into play.

The play

One of our casual games last night went like this:

  1. First turn, Island, Crab
  2. Second turn: Crab, Island (that’s the top 6 cards gone)
  3. Third turn, Misty Rainforest, Forest (that’s the top 12 cards gone)
  4. Fourth turn Misty Rainforest, Island, Harrow (that’s 24 more cards)

By my 5th turn, my opponent had lost the top 42 cards of their library. That’s two things:

  1. Incredibly powerful
  2. Incredibly lucky

Being able to play a cheap blocker that can passively win you the game by getting you massive card advantage is insanely powerful.

Ever since Hedron Crab hit the scene, I’ve felt that it was one of the most powerful cards ever printed (mainly because I wanted it to be - I love passive combos). If you’re as lucky at Magic as I was last night, you might start buying up Crabs as fast as you can see them like I am.
